Respighi Pines of Rome

In this spectacular end-of-year celebration, the RBC Symphony Orchestra is joined by the acclaimed conductor Martyn Brabbins, an inspirational force in British music.

There’s dazzling orchestral colour and rich romanticism as Respighi creates an almost cinematic landscape in his popular Pines of Rome.  Children play in in the evening sunlight, pine trees fringe the entrance to a catacomb, a nightingale sings from moonlit trees, and a marching Roman Army evokes past glories.

The concert also includes Busoni’s epic Piano Concerto, played by the 2019 Ferruccio Busoni Piano Competition winner and RBC pianist, Emanuil Ivanov who has played in some of the world’s most prestigious concert halls including a lockdown recital at La Scala, Milan.  A work of epic proportions and bewildering difficulty, it has achieved almost mythical status, only dared attempted by the most assured of virtuosic performers.  Who better then to uncover this neglected masterpiece?

Nature also takes centre stage in the world première of RBC composition student Kinna Whitehead's new work for voice and orchestra, The Lily, which also feature Kinna as vocalist.

This is music to showcase the whole orchestra and a fitting end to another year of superb performances by RBC musicians and actors.

Running time approx. two hours including interval
