Birmingham City University : Our Research and Expertise

Our Research and Expertise

Our researchers at work

Birmingham City University means business when it comes to research. We have made our biggest commitment yet to develop our research profile by launching a five-year research strategy. This strategy will ensure that we are best placed to collaborate with the business community, focusing on the development of new concepts and techniques for the benefit of organisations, through a variety of sophisticated knowledge transfer mechanisms.

The University has an excellent track record of both applied and fundamental research, either commissioned by or undertaken in collaboration with, industry, business and public bodies.   We work with companies throughout the spectrum, from large international corporations to local start-ups.

We are an outward-looking organisation.  We see industry partnerships and collaborations as central to high-quality research, development, and consultancy expertise, which is relevant to our many communities both at home and abroad. We recognise that research doesn’t end with the publishing of an academic paper or report but requires an effective partnership to ensure that the research outcomes are transferred effectively to the client.

Partnership

Our network of Research Centres of Excellence represent our primary vehicles through which external organisations can partner with the University or commission research services from the University. Our academic and research staff working within the Centres are highly experienced researchers and also have great empathy with the needs of external organisations, with many staff having joined the university from an industry or practitioner base.

More in-depth detail about our research and Research Centres can be found on our research pages

Within this section you can read some of the work our Jewellery Industry Innovation Centre and Interiors & Lifestyle Futures group has conducted with business, or how our Knowledge Transfer Partnerships have helped dozens of companies.
