Intelligent Systems

The Faculty has developed a strong international profile in educational robotics by hosting the UK Micromouse Championships since 2004.

More information on the UK Micromouse Championships can be found via the following links:

Other group activities include:

BCU TechFest, ROBOtic, VEX Robotics and the Midlands Micromouse and Robotics Club, incorporating the Robotics and Intelligent Systems.

The integration of sensors, controllers, software and AI algorithms is used in mobile robot platforms can also be used in intelligent environments. The intelligent systems research group combines research in computing, robotics and electronics to collect and analyse data to support smart environments.

The group is seeking research students to contribute to work in the following areas:

  • Secure data capture and transmission from sensing devices to inform applications in home automation and smart cities.
  • Analysis and reconstruction of contexts to make sense of data captured in smart environments and morphing organisations.
  • The design and development of intelligent information systems.
  • The use of robots in social spaces using intelligent systems for non-intrusive assistance.

Key research questions include:

  • How can we make sense of data captured in smart cities and move from data capture to understanding and multi-dimensional intelligence?
  • How can intelligence be embedded in buildings?
  • How can we determine patterns of behaviour and develop intelligent applications that operate on the determined behaviour?
  • To what extent do intelligent systems contribute to change in behaviour?
