Here are the key areas you’ll need to address:
Studying a postgraduate course usually means you want to specialise in something. So what’s driving you?
Show that you’ve researched the course offering. What is it about this particular course that appeals to you? Is it the lecturers? The modules? Etc.
Tutors want to know that you can handle postgraduate study, so show them how your undergraduate experiences or work life has equipped you for a more advanced level of study. Key areas to address are research and group work but this can vary depending on your chosen course.
Add anything relevant that relates back to your chosen course and shows how your skills will contribute towards your learning. What extra-curricular activities have you taken part in? What awards have you won? What employment or voluntary experience do you have that has helped you develop transferable skills? How do these specifically relate to the course you are applying for?
You should also mention your future plans and how a postgraduate qualification fits in. Try to look beyond your postgraduate study – do you plan to jump straight into a specific career or follow your studies with a research degree? Lastly, use plain, professional English and, where possible, utilise the language of your chosen industry.

The module aims to provide you with a foundation for academic research skills employed in all modules, but particularly the Master’s dissertation. This will enhance your learning experience, so your research is both industry-relevant and academically valuable. You will learn to evaluate the conceptual nature of research philosophies and methods, appraise existing literature to develop a literature review using appropriate research methods and techniques, design a poster presentation which outlines integrated and analysed data using appropriate research methods and techniques, and make critical judgements on the applicability of appropriate professional skills and research ethics within a given research context.
In this module you will utilise mathematical concepts such as transform calculus and matrix theory to model systems, using both the transfer function and state-space paradigms. You will then use time and frequency response methods to design controllers for linear systems, applying pole placement techniques using both input-output and state-feedback approaches. You will then extend these to observer design and LQR optimisation. Studying in this module will involve traditional lectures and tutorials, and you will also use industry-standard software for problem-solving within a coursework-based assessment.
In this module you will learn about the fundamentals of thermofluids, including conservation laws and their application, viscosity and the constitutive equations, boundary layers, turbulence, and thermofluid properties. You will develop your understanding of the basic laws of thermodynamics and the fundamentals of fluid mechanics and apply these to complex engineering problems involving energy conservation, heat transfer, and fluid transfer. You will develop the skills to evaluate the mechanisms of combustion and thermodynamic process modelling, and critically appraise the underpinning science of computational fluid dynamics.
This module will provide you with a rigorous grounding in industrial standard design, analysis, and simulation capability, and you will become competent and skilled in the use of advanced computer modelling and simulation techniques. You will critically appraise the use of new and emerging technologies and their impact on the design and manufacture of components; model and analyse vibrations in solids; build simulation models for the purposes of the control of dynamic systems; and develop and evaluate linear dynamic models of automotive and mechanical components.
Advanced Systems Engineering
This module will provide you with an understanding of the fundamental concepts that underpin continuum mechanics, with a focus on the analysis techniques employed on the more common components and structures. You will use advanced failure analysis techniques to determine and analyse stresses and deformations in complex engineering components, and you will consider how this is applied for design assurance purposes. You will also develop an understanding of the behaviour of solids under two or three dimensional stress fields, and the limitations imposed by assumptions and boundary conditions.
Advanced Materials and Manufacture
This module will provide you with the opportunity to investigate the world of new materials, and to develop an understanding of the techniques used in Computer Aided Manufacture. You will consider new techniques in advanced materials and manufacture, and argue and defend the case for their use, with a particular focus on sustainability. You will also synthesize and analyse new materials using appropriate methods, and apply 3D simulation techniques to assess the manufacturing process. The module will be delivered through a combination of taught content, and practical and theoretical research project work, set in the context of industrial applications.
Individual Master’s Project
You will undertake a sustained, in-depth and research-informed project, exploring an area of personal interest to you. In agreement with your supervisor, you will decide on your topic which will take the form of a practical outcome (artefact) with accompanying contextual material. Your topic must be aligned to the programme you are studying and informed by the research strategy of your school. You should also consider the relevance of this topic to your future academic or professional development. You are expected to work independently but will receive additional one-to-one support from your supervisor, who will be familiar with your chosen topic area.
You will acquire knowledge and understanding of the subject through formal lectures, tutor-led seminars and practical activities, as well as a range of independent learning activities. The course structure emphasises guided, self-directed and student-centred learning with a progressively increasing independence of approach, thought and process.
Lectures will introduce themes, theories and concepts, which are further explored in seminars. You will benefit from technology-enhanced learning, where appropriate, through online resources, discussion forums and other activities. You will consult advanced textbooks, together with professional material and journal articles, in order to ensure that you develop a critical understanding of work at the forefront of your discipline.
A range of assessment methods are employed with associated assessment criteria. Knowledge and skills are assessed, formatively and summatively, by a number of methods such as coursework, examinations (seen and unseen, open and closed-book), presentations, practical assignments, vivas, online forums, podcasts, and project work.
