The Bradford Textile Society have been encouraging and inspiring textile students with their prize scheme for nearly 100 years and have become one of the most highly regarded textile design competitions in the UK due to the vast array of areas covered.

The competition has 16 different categories covering a diverse range of textile processes, and invites students from across the country to showcase their most creative and innovative approaches to modern textile design.

Lucy entered the Joseph H. Clissold Ltd category, open only to first year undergraduate students, requiring her to submit a woven fabric design showing creative potential.

Lucy’s design was a woven sample of mustard yellow, grey and black yarn that followed a plain weaving structure. The piece was inspired by Lucy’s ‘structured and unstructured’ personal concept and was finished by hand manipulating areas of the weave to become unstructured.

Lucy commented on the advice she would give to anyone thinking of getting involved in the competition in the future, “Take your time creating the sample but really enjoy experimenting and producing the final piece”.

Lucy’s tutors are looking forward to accompanying her to the awards ceremony next month.
