University more than quadruples Portuguese intake

UNIVERSITY NEWS LAST UPDATED : 16 NOVEMBER 2016

Birmingham City University is showcasing its educational opportunities in Portugal for the first time, as the institution celebrates more than quadrupling its current Portuguese cohort over the last two years.

Birmingham City University is one of 12 UK universities exhibiting as part of OK Estudante’s Northern Tour of Portugal, which commenced in Aveiro at the city’s Centro de Congressos yesterday (Tuesday 15 November).

The tour will also visit northern cities Coimbra (Wednesday 16 November), Braga (Thursday 17 November) and finish in Porto on Friday 18 November.

Charles Magee, International Regional Manager for the EU and Sub-Saharan Africa, said:

“This is the first time Birmingham City University has actively promoted its courses in Portugal, as we have seen a doubling in the number of Portuguese students choosing to study at Birmingham City University over the last year alone.

“We are very excited to have the opportunity of telling Portuguese students face-to-face all about our applied and practice-based learning, which will enable students from Portugal to gain outstanding employability skills that they will need to jump start their future careers in today’s global marketplace.”

With over 24,000 students from 80 countries, Birmingham City University is a large, diverse and increasingly popular place to study. The University puts students at the heart of everything it does, giving them the best opportunities for future success.

Undergraduate Finn Longmuir from Vale do Lobo in the Algarve studies Media and Communications at Birmingham City University:

“I am now a second year student and it is honestly the best decision I could have made; being the best option with the course it offers, the facilities, as well as invaluable work experience opportunities – which looks brilliant on your CV – and the chance to network in such a vast city. Birmingham itself is a very vibrant student city and a good change for students coming from Portugal.”

Other popular subjects studied by Portuguese students at Birmingham City University include Criminology, Engineering, Jewellery Design, Music and Psychology.

Postgraduate student Carlos Alberto Viegas Castro De Albuquerque from Lisbon studies International Business Law at Birmingham City University:

“The reason why I came to UK was because I wanted to improve my English proficiency before going into the professional market. So, instead of doing my master’s in Portugal for two years and then come to UK, I decided to achieve both parallel to one another by studying for my master’s and improving my English at the same time.

“Overall, Birmingham City University is equipping me with the precise tools and knowledge that I will need for my future as a working professional.”
