Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, part of Birmingham City University, has been crowned the West Midlands’ building of the year 2018 by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).
Royal Birmingham Conservatoire moved to its new home on Jennens Road in 2017 and was designed by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios. The £57 million building is the first new conservatoire to be built in the UK for 30 years.
The RIBA awards celebrate the best architecture across the country and regional winners will now be considered for a RIBA National Award from which the shortlist for the coveted Stirling Prize will be drawn.
Other winners announced at the awards ceremony on 22 May include Mailbox Birmingham and University of Birmingham.
Royal Birmingham Conservatoire boasts five public performance spaces, including a 500-seat concert hall, a 150-seat recital hall and a 100-seat organ studio. The building also includes the first permanent jazz space in any UK conservatoire – the 80-seat Eastside Jazz Club.
