EDS is a central department of Birmingham City University which initiates and develops policy and support that enhances the quality of the student and staff learning experience.
Building upon a strong partnership with Birmingham City Students’ Union, EDSprovides guidance and funding that bring together innovators from across the University to embed the University Learning and Teaching Strategy.

Student engagement at Birmingham City University encourages students to be partners with the University, and to share their ideas of learning and teaching with staff.
Current student engagement partnership schemes include Student Academic Partners, Student Academic Mentoring Partnerships and Collaborative Partnerships, and demonstrate that student engagement should not be confined just to the curriculum, but should be woven into the fabric of the whole student experience.
Student engagement helps to improve student learning by developing meaningful conversations between staff and students as that embed the notion of shared ownership and student inclusivity. Through this approach the establishment of a learning community encourages successful integration of students across the University.
Awards and recognition
The success of this approach, and the significance of our partnership with Birmingham City Students’ Union, has been recognised through the Times Higher Education Award for Outstanding Support for Students and a National Union of Students award for innovative engagement.
In addition, in 2012 the Higher Education Academy asked the University to collaborate as the consultant for its Students as Partners change initiative which involves 10 UK universities seeking to develop a variety of student engagement initiatives at their own institutions.
We believe that student engagement not only encourages students to be involved and enthused, but also enables them to gain substantial personal development and employability skills.
The continuous process to embed student engagement across the University is part of a culture change for both staff and students that encourages students to feel proud of the University while enhancing a sharing of knowledge with staff partners. The perspective of students as co-creators, as opposed to passive recipients of their learning experience, helps to develop partnerships and to develop relationships between staff and students.
Students take ownership and responsibility of their University experience, jointly with staff, to make real meaningful change to ensure the best outcomes. As a consequence they feel empowered, aspirations are raised and wider opportunities for working across the University are made possible.
