How to get the most from an Open Day
We know going somewhere new can be daunting, especially when it’s a big university with lots of people and it involves an important decision like where you might spend the next three or four years of your life…
Sound overwhelming? It’s not - it’s actually a lot of fun! Here’s what NOT to do on the day to help you make the most out of your visit. Enjoy!
What not to do
We like to class ourselves as experts in this field, so to help you make the right decision and most importantly enjoy your day, we’ve put together a few tips on what not to do at our Open Day.
1. Don't nod off
Definitely attend a course talk but if you find yourself feeling drowsy – maybe it’s not the right course for you, we promise it’s not just because they’re boring! Do your research before choosing a course to help you wake up to your future.
2. Don't get lost
Before you arrive make sure you’re heading to the right university and the right campus. Once you've arrived if you feel overwhelmed or like you’ve seen that tree before, there will be a handy map in your Open Day programme. If map reading isn’t your forte, grab a member of staff or a student (they’ll be in orange t-shirts), who will happily show you the way.
3. Don't worry about asking 'stupid' questions
…because there’s no such thing! We’ll try our best to answer all your queries, although asking ‘would I be able to bring my pet snake along to my lecture?’ is maybe a little bit silly. We recommend asking as many questions as possible and talking to all our different services from finance, accommodation and the Students' Union, so you can make an informed decision.
4. Don't worry about coming alone or bringing the whole street
Whether you’re a lone wolf or part of the pack, we don’t mind! Some people prefer to take it all in alone, others want the grandparents, third cousins twice removed and the neighbour’s cat to see where they could be studying. We’ve seen it all.
5. Don't miss out on Birmingham itself
We’re a city university for a reason. Studying here means being a part of Birmingham and there’s a lot to do and see.
6. Don't get 'hangry'
Avoid the ‘hanger’ (definition: when you are so hungry that your lack of food causes you to become angry, frustrated or both.) and use your free drink voucher for you and a guest. You’re bound to work up an appetite so don’t forget to sample one of our many café’s on campus.
7. Don't be afraid
Our tutors and lecturers are only human! Don’t be intimidated to approach them, they know their subject inside out. Our current students will be on hand to give you their honest opinions. You'll love what they have to say so ask away! As well as having a natter, don’t be scared to get involved! There’ll be demonstrations of our facilities and watch out because there'll be a crime scene to solve too!
8. Don't wear your PJ's
…but unless you have an interview you don’t need to wear a suit either. We recommend you dress smart casual and comfortable – there are lots of activities that you might like to get involved in and might be hands on!
9. Don't forget to have fun
We know it’s a jam-packed day and there’s a lot to take in, but remember to have fun. After all, this could be the start of your BCU journey!
10. Don't forget to enter our competition
We’ll be running a competition on the day across all of our campuses, keep your eyes peeled for further details of how you could win!
