Our expertise, experience and research is contemporary and issue-based, focusing on socio-political, cultural, environmental, professional and technological concerns.
We enjoy mutually beneficial and long-established relationships with industries and communities of the West Midlands region. We collaborate with over 100 practices, construction consultants and experts. This ensures that you will also engage with:

- Visiting critics
- Student mentors
We give our students the opportunity to directly engage with the city with our CO.LAB module. We also provide real-life learning experience in the industry with external clients within our Live Projects series. We ensure that both of these initiatives contribute to the development of distinct employability, professional and transferable skills. These skills include team work, project planning, entrepreneurialism, negotiation and understanding of complimentary practices.
We are constantly developing our relationships with our alumni and collaborating partners through our Friends of the Birmingham School of Architecture LinkedIn group. The group provides a forum which allows a sharing of ideas, making connections to reflect, debate and review key issues, topics and events.
Our full-time MArch students can take advantage of our Teaching Practice scheme, which gives them access to supporting tutorials with leading professional practices to supplement their regular studio tutorials.
On the Interior Design course you will be taught by experts who specialise in: Design Communication, Creative Processes, Sustainability, Brand Development, Hospitality and Strategic Design Management.
Our MA Design and Visualisation staff have experience in working with brand names such as AGA, Cadbury’s and JCB.
Both our BA and MA Product and Furniture Design courses are delivered by experts with significant experience in design for the mass market, design for commission and low volume production.
Working with business
Our graduates engage with live project scenarios, research activities and real-life learning opportunities. This results in a large retention of highly employable professionals in our city.

Research input
All our academic staff engage in research and/or professional practice through the Centre for Design and Creative Industries (CDCI).
Our community of postgraduate research students host centres in Landscape and Environment Perception, Zero Carbon, and Policy and Pedagogy.
