Elaine Ackers was educated at Chethams School of Music and Guildhall School of Music and Drama where, after winning all the main cello prizes and chamber music award, she completed her studies with distinction in 1987.
She has played numerous solo and chamber music recitals, toured internationally and recorded extensively with many of the top UK orchestras. The include The Academy of St Martin in the Fields, English Chamber Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Philharmonia, guest principal with BBC Symphony Orchestra, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Welsh National Opera, and closer to home, for many years with CBSO. She was a founder member and principal cello with Longborough Festival Orchestra for 20 years, and played with the Royal Shakespeare Company (1995- 2012) appearing in shows such as Matilda, Macbeth and many more.
Elaine was invited to play with BCMG in 1993 and subsequently, was asked to become the cellist of their string quartet in residence. She performed both as a soloist and within the larger BCMG ensemble for over 30 years. Past highlights have included performances at the Salzburg Festival with Sir Simon Rattle, BBC proms, Aldeburgh Festival, residency at the Wigmore Hall and Milton court and regular concerts at their Birmingham home, the CBSO Centre. She has worked with BCMG education department since its inception over 25 years ago.
Elaine is often invited to coach youth orchestras and chamber ensembles, adjudicate and examine. She frequently performs cello duo recitals with her husband Ulrich Heinen.
Elaine has always loved working with young people and is much in demand as an experienced and demanding teacher. Many of her students have become members of NYO, won competitions, played as soloists with orchestras, won scholarships to conservatoires and are now leading successful professional lives as cellists.
Away from her cello and music, Elaine enjoys walking, baking, spending time with her family and her wonderful grandchildren!
