Messiaen’s haunting masterpiece comes to life in a concert of spiritual depth, breath-taking beauty, and otherworldly soundscapes.
Incarcerated in a prisoner of war camp during World War II, Messiaen wrote his Quartet for the End of Time for the musicians available to him – a clarinettist, violinist, cellist and pianist (Messiaen himself). Taking inspiration from the biblical Book of Revelations and the sense that “there shall be time no longer”, the eight movements feature the instruments in different combinations or solo. Its premiere took place in the depths of winter before an audience of several hundred prisoners and German officers.
