Postscript - A musical exhibition for Holocaust Memorial Day
Created by Anna Dumbiotis with RBC students and alumni
27 January 2025 marks 80 years since the liberation of Auschwitz. In a world that grows increasingly more divided, memorial and education surrounding this fateful chapter in our history is more relevant than ever.
A Final Major Project created by Anna Dumbiotis at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, Postscript endeavours to hold space for memorial and education within Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, putting music and testimony at the forefront.
Music is a powerful - and sometimes overlooked - historical artefact which, in its intangible nature, connects us on a profoundly human level. Presenting this alongside readings of lived experiences contextualises the stories of Holocaust survivors, placing a great emphasis on remembrance and building towards a more harmonious future.
Music includes works by this affected by Nazi persecution including Hanns Eisler, Ilse Weber, Karel Švenk and Adolf Strauss, as well as works by those whose music retroactively memorialises this history such as Mikis Theodorakis, Lori Laitman and Jake Heggie.
Split into four sections, the project examines how hateful ideas can gain momentum, how life played out in the camps of Terezín and Mauthausen, and how survivors built new lives following the tragedy.
This programme is supported by a grant from The Association of Jewish Refugees (AJR).
