Public Research Seminar: Germaine Tailleferre, neoclassical pioneer
Caroline Potter (Royal Birmingham Conservatoire)
Germaine Tailleferre (1892-1983) is generally remembered as the only female member of the French group of composers Les Six. Her music is attracting more interest, but it is remarkable how much she has been marginalised in discussions on French music.
In this paper, Caroline Potter repositions Tailleferre at the centre of the contemporary scene, specifically placing her Sonatine for string quartet and other works in the context of debates on neoclassicism in France in the 1910s and 1920s.
Caroline Potter (pictured above) is Visiting Reader in French Music at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. She has published books on Boulez, Satie, the Boulanger sisters and Dutilleux, is a regular broadcaster on French music and reviewer of contemporary music. Her latest book Pierre Boulez: Organised Delirium is cited in the Times Literary Supplement Book of the Year 2024 list. She has just completed a short book on Tailleferre for the Cambridge University Press Elements series.
