The issues concerned with measurement, assessment, evaluation, and curriculum in music education are many and complex. This presentation outlines the key terms and concepts listed in the title, places them into a contemporary music education context, questions what is taking place, situates theme against a political backdrop, and presents arguments as to why these are problematic areas.

Martin Fautley is Emeritus Professor of Music Education at Birmingham City University. He researches and writes about various aspects of teaching and learning in music, specialising in creativity and assessment. He is the author of ten books, as well as over sixty journal articles, book chapters, and academic research papers. He is co-editor of The British Journal of Music Education.
