Public Research seminar: Lisztian movement, time and sonority in Ravel’s piano music
Salome Chitaia (Royal Birmingham Conservatoire)
This paper focuses on an under-explored Lisztian trait in Maurice Ravel’s piano music - approach to movement, time and sonority. The use of rubato, pacing, structural fluidity and sonority will be explored through performance practice and score analysis and the presentation will conclude with a historically informed performance of Ravel’s Valses nobles et sentimentales on a 19th century Erard, a favourite instrument of the composer.
Salome Chitaia is a PhD student at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire conducting practice-based research on Lisztian trace in Ravel’s pianism. As a pianist, Salome has performed in the USA, Israel, Poland, France, Italy, Ukraine, Serbia and Georgia. Recent concerto highlights include performances with the Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra and the Israel Sinfonietta. Upcoming engagements for 2025 will centre around Ravel’s 150th anniversary with the Ravel left hand concerto in February and an all-Ravel recital in March.
Running time approx. one hour and 30 minutes
