The House of Bernarda Alba by Federico Garcia Lorca (new version by Rona Munro)
An amateur performance by kind permission of Nick Hern Books
Director Dewi Johnson
Casting by Danièle Sanderson
In Rona Munro’s modern adaptation of the classic Spanish play, La Casa de Bernarda Alba by Federico García Lorca, The House of Bernarda Alba pays homage to the original while giving voices to silenced characters to explore their emotional and psychological states.
Told through a contemporary voice, the play centres on Bernarda and her five daughters - Angustias, Magdalena, Amelia, Martirio, and Adela - who live with their mother. Following the death of their father, Bernarda imposes a strict period of mourning, confining the daughters to the house, leading to tragic consequences.
The House of Bernarda Alba depicts Bernarda’s control over her daughters, highlighting their claustrophobia, isolation, and frustration, offering a window into how society treats women.
Contains scenes of violence and smoking.
This performance lasts approximately 1 hour 50 mins including interval.
