Day in the life of a Foundation Fashion Business student
Follow Mahleah, a Foundation Year Fashion Business student, throughout a typical day in her life at university.
08:30 – Due to living so close to the university, I usually wake up around this time for class and scroll through Pinterest. That’s always been the first thing I do as it seems to wake me up more and I start the day feeling inspired.
Once I’ve exhausted Pinterest, it's time to start getting myself ready. I’ve always been a ‘get ready before breakfast’ person, otherwise, I feel as though I'm not planning to go anywhere.
09:30 – By this time, I’ve changed and done my hair and make–up. I’m not sure if it's got anything to do with studying fashion, but I am going to spend my morning getting dressed up! Once I'm ready, I head to the kitchen and grab myself a protein yoghurt and a protein shake. A quick and easy breakfast that keeps me going till lunch.
10:00 – My lectures start at 10, so I take my shake and the rest of the things I need for uni and am on campus in 2 minutes, thanks to living so close by.
Today, we were focusing on the start of our signature project and my lecturer was trying to get our brains flowing with different ideas for this. The day started by working in groups and picking one of our topics, trying to style a white shirt with that theme - our theme was R&B. After styling, we then had to do a mini photoshoot with anything we could find.
13:00 – After finishing the photoshoot, it was lunchtime and we headed to the canteen. Luckily for me, on Tuesday they serve katsu curry, which is one of my favourites. There's always lots of choice and I always find something that's healthy but delicious.
14:00 – For the rest of the afternoon, we were in the computer room, researching different parts of the topic that we had chosen and where we could go with this, whether that was making a zine, magazine, trend boards or a marketing scheme for a brand.
My lecturer spoke to me about the different topics that I was looking at, and because I couldn’t narrow them down to one, she told me to pick a topic on something that I am strongly passionate about, so I chose the gym. After looking at different ideas from past students’ outcomes, I decided to make a magazine. So, I spent the rest of the afternoon looking at different content that I could use for a magazine.
16:00 – After a few hours of researching, our lecturer told us that she had an at-home task for us to get our minds running. Since we had spent the morning styling a white shirt in a group and many of us were styling something that wasn't our theme, she wanted us to individually go home and style a white shirt with our own theme.
I thought there was no way I was going to be able to style a white shirt with my theme of the gym, but I was going to have to make it work. I spoke to my lecturer, and she said it could be as simple as going to the gym and wearing a white shirt, almost doing that ‘straight from work to the gym’ look.
17:00 – I left uni and headed home to get changed to go to the gym and pack my gym bag with my white shirt. I messaged one of my friends to let them know I was heading to the gym and if she wanted to join because I also needed help taking some photos for my white shirt photoshoot.
17:30 – It’s about a 15-minute walk to the gym, and once we got there, we got started on the photoshoot. Wearing a white shirt in the gym isn’t the normal attire, so I was quite nervous! Once it was done, we both got on with our session.
19:30 – Once we had both finished our workouts, we headed home passing by the supermarket to grab some dinner. Once home, I grab a quick shower and change.
20:15 – It always gets to this time and I’m starving, so I head to the kitchen and luckily there’s no one in there. I always love an empty kitchen because at this point, I'm exhausted and I just want to make my food and go to my room to relax. I decided to make a spaghetti bolognese for dinner.
21:00 – Once I’ve finished my food, I wash it up and head back to my room to look at the photos that we had taken in the gym for my photoshoot. For this project, we must keep up with writing in our blogs. I wrote about everything we had completed today and uploaded the photos.
21:45 – By the time I’ve completed all my work for the day, I get myself all cosy into bed and put a podcast on to listen to in the background whilst I settle down to sleep. Just like I do in the morning, I wind my brain down to looking at Pinterest again and as soon as I'm too tired to keep my eyes open, it’s time to sleep.
