Best legal shows on Netflix right now
With most of us stuck indoors for the last nine weeks, it’s safe to say we’ve done our fair share of banana bread baking, afternoon napping and of course, Netflix binge watching.
So whilst it’s currently socially acceptable to spend the whole day glued to the TV, we’ve decided to put together a list of the best Law and Justice shows we’ve seen and that you can watch on Netflix right now.
When They See Us
Based on a harrowing true story, When They See Us looks at the case of the “Central Park Five”, a group of five teenagers who are wrongly accused and convicted of a brutal assault and rape that they did not commit. The story highlights injustice and institutional racism and takes you on an emotional rollercoaster through the boys’ journey to redemption. This is a must-watch!
Seven Seconds
When a police officer commits a hit-and-run against a black teenager, and works with his team on a cover-up of the crime, the community they live in are faced with racial tension, police brutality, and a hard-hitting search to find out the truth. The characters in this series are relatable, real and will have you truly immersed in their fight for justice.
The Innocence Files
This docuseries follows the journey to justice of eight innocent people who were wrongly convicted of serious crimes they did not commit. The series is a look behind the scenes of the work of The Innocent Project as they unravel each case and expose the injustices made against both the victims and those wrongly incarcerated.
How to Get Away with Murder
How to Get Away with Murder is a legal thriller series about a group of five Law students who get themselves embroiled in a troublesome murder plot alongside their law professor, who is also a prominent criminal defence attorney. The twists and turns of this story are told through flashbacks and flash-forwards which will definitely have you on the edge of your seat.
Brian Banks
This is a movie rather than a series but one we had to include on the list of must-watch TV. The movie narrates the true story of promising football player Brian Banks, who was wrongly convicted of a crime he did not commit while in his teens. The story reveals how The Innocence Project worked to help Brian fight the injustice he faced and help him to clear his name and reclaim his life and career.
Suits
Suits is set in a New York City law firm and tells the story of Mike Ross, a college dropout who secures a job as a law associate whilst on the run from a drug deal that went wrong. Mike and his boss Harvey try cases for the firm whilst trying their best to keep Mike’s secret under wraps.
Daredevil
Not even the law TV genre can escape the pull of the superhero media boom! One of the series to come from Netflix’s deal with Marvel, alongside Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist, Daredevil is the pick of the bunch. Matt Murdoch is a devoutly Catholic, blind criminal attorney and the masked vigilante Daredevil, wrestling with his double identity whilst trying to save his neighbourhood, New York’s Hell’s Kitchen, from the crime lord Wilson Fisk.
The Netflix catalogue is vast, and a little overwhelming, this list has something for everyone so hopefully you have found your next binge-watch!
