Jenni Phillips studied at the Purcell School and the Royal College of Music with Michael Winfield. She then went on to win a Countess of Munster Scholarship to study at the National Centre for Orchestral Studies.

Soon after leaving NCOS, she was appointed as 2nd Oboe in the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra where she also frequently played Principal Oboe. The orchestra enjoyed a regular touring and recording schedule.

In 1993, she left the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra to pursue a career in Birmingham, where she became an Associate Member of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO). Jenni has also appeared in the oboe section with many other British orchestras.

When the Junior Conservatoire was initiated in 1993, Jenni was delighted to accept the invitation to teach the oboe and remained there for a very enjoyable 20 years.

Having also been an oboe teacher for the Senior Conservatoire since 1996, Jenni became Woodwind Co-ordinator in 2010, taking on several of the responsibilities for the department, alongside Professor Michael Harris. Jenni then took up the role of Head of Woodwind in August 2011. She loves helping young people find their true confidence on and off the platform in whatever part of the music profession inspires them.

Jenni has been involved in many education ventures, including workshops for both CBSO and Birmingham Contemporary Music Group (BCMG). She has appeared as guest specialist at many Double Reed events and has coached the oboes at National Youth Orchestra (NYO) Open Days as well as the CBSO Youth Orchestra. She is regularly invited to adjudicate competitions, talk at woodwind events and lead double reed ensembles.

Jenni thoroughly enjoys taking reed making classes which she calls her ‘reed surgery’ and has taught at the Royal Academy of Music and for the British Double Reed Society, in addition to Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.

Jenni is delighted that her students are now sending their students to study with her at RBC. She is officially an ‘Oboe Grandma’!
