Do I have to go to university Open Days and other myths busted

What do I wear? Who do I bring? Do I even need to go? So many questions come to mind when thinking about going to University Open Days. We've put some advice together to help you ahead of our next Open Day.

Do I have to go to a university Open Day?

Well, you don’t have to, but we’d recommend it! Although you can get lots of information from our website, nothing quite beats seeing it for yourself. Visiting our campus will give you an idea of what it’s like to live and study in Birmingham, as well as seeing our amazing facilities and tutors up close.

What do I wear?

There's no strict dress codes for an Open Day, however smart casual is a good rule to follow. If you don't wear uniform to your sixth form or college, then whatever you would wear there will be good. Think a casual evening out to a restaurant. You want to make a good impression and look presentable but the stilettos or suit and tie can probably stay at home. Talking of footwear, you will do a lot of walking so we recommend some comfortable shoes or trainers.

What happens at an Open Day?

Quite a lot actually. The main attractions are the course talks, where you'll get a big insight into what you're looking to study from an academic, and the accommodation tours, where you'll get to snoop around the halls of residence and see where you could end up living during your first year. There'll also be tours of the facilities, a welcome address (usually from the Vice Chancellor), talks about student life and a chance for you to look around everything on your own.

Can I bring my parents?

Of course you can! A lot of students bring their parents, or a friend to Open Day, so you won’t be considered “uncool” if you bring them. It’s a great chance for them to see where you might be studying and to help you make this big decision! They might embarrass you… but we can’t control that!

What do I need to bring?

Bring your registration email or letter to speed things up at registration. It’s a busy day, so try to remember what course you want to study or a rough idea of what you're interested in. You don’t need to bring a portfolio or proof of your qualifications, you won’t be interviewed by our tutors on the spot!

Can I come on my own?

Definitely. Some students turn up with family and friends but just as many turn up alone. You won’t even notice, as our staff and student ambassadors are so friendly BCU will feel like family very quickly!

What questions should I ask?

There’s no such thing as a stupid question… promise! Why don’t you ask about where you’ll be studying and learning? Or how many plug sockets do the rooms have? Or how about asking a student ambassador what they do for fun when they’re not studying or how they manage their money? Be curious, there will always be someone who can answer your questions. If you need more advice take a look at our questions article here.

What should I expect?

Expect a fun, interactive and inspiring day! First things first, when you arrive you need to register. Once you’ve registered, our friendly staff and students can help you find your way. We’d recommend going to a course talk and tour, asking some questions to tutors and current students, and seeing the accommodation on offer, at a minimum! Don’t forget to explore Birmingham itself too.

Am I too young to come?

The youngest attendee we've had at an Open Day was nine – so it’s definitely not too early to think about your future! Some students are in their final year of college, others are just starting to think about it. Mature student are welcome too!

Will it take all day?

Open Day starts at 9am and finishes at 3pm. We’d recommend (of course) arriving early so you can fit as much as possible in your day. It’s jam-packed but worth it! You can look at your Open Day programme beforehand and see exactly how much time you’ll need, be prepared.
