After qualifying as Registered General Nurse in 1995 Mike worked clinically in local Birmingham Hospitals before joining BCU as a nursing lecturer in 2004. He held several roles over a 13 year period, including Senior Lecturer and Head of Department for Practice Learning, ultimately becoming Associate Head of School of Nursing and Midwifery.

In 2017 Mike became West Midlands Regional Director of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) and in January 2020 took up the national role of Director for England and part of the RCN Executive team.

Returning to BCU at the end of 2021 Mike took up the role of Quality Enhancement Lead for the then School of Health Sciences and has been in post as an Associate Professor since then before becoming Interim Head of The College of Health and Care Professions.
