This exhibition will explore the work of Tom Hicks. Tom is a multidisciplinary artist, best known for his ongoing project, Black Country Type. Presented via the Instagram account blackcountrytype, it is an ongoing photographic project.
In this series of images, he applies his unique aesthetic to the region, focusing on words, typography, handmade lettering and signs. He also photographs ‘types’ of architectural features, objects and the post-industrial landscape of the area.
Tom has developed a socially engaged practice, working on community projects and in collaboration with schools and colleges across the West Midlands. His practice spans photography, graphic design and 3D work.
His working methods are informed by psychogeography. Tom’s images are taken on freeform drifts through the Black Country region, typically travelling by bicycle. He has developed a lo-fi practice that brings together a range of influences and interests, including popular culture, music, design, fashion, typography, architecture and graphic design.
Tom has recently been commissioned by Ikon Gallery and Transport for West Midlands to create a public sculpture for Halesowen. His work has been featured in Dezeen, The Guardian, Huck and The British Journal of Photography.
The photobook Black Country Type was published by The Modernist in 2023. The design of the book was inspired by Tom’s research into mid-century factory product catalogues produced by companies across the Black Country.
This exhibition will showcase well known images alongside new work, ranging from photographs and prints to sculpture and film. In addition to his own practice, Tom regularly collaborates with people from other artforms, including poets, painters and graphic designers; the results of this activity will be displayed here.
