This exhibition will explore the work of Emily John, a multi-disciplinary artist whose practice investigates themes of identity deeply rooted in her experience of British working-class heritage. Emily combines modern industrial technologies with traditional making methods to produce a socially reflexive body of work.
In this series of works, Emily examines the domestic impact of industry, addressing the subject in its "own tongue" to encourage dialogue about class equality. Her pieces engage with the intersections of tradition and innovation, providing a unique perspective on the role of industry in shaping personal and collective identities.
Emily’s academic and professional journey underscores the depth of her practice. She holds an MA in Print from the Royal College of Art and has participated in residencies at STEAMhouse and the Birmingham School of Architecture and Design. Additionally, she is the recipient of the Peter Reddick Bursary Award for Innovation in Contemporary Relief Printmaking, further emphasising her contributions to the field.
Her practice spans printmaking, industrial technology, and community engagement, highlighting her ability to foster critical conversations through art. Emily’s work draws on influences from both modern and traditional techniques, creating a dialogue that resonates with diverse audiences.
This exhibition will showcase printmaking, ceramics, and multimedia pieces.
Running alongside this exhibition will be the work of Cedric Price and the exhibition, creating a dynamic dialogue between Emily’s exploration of identity and class and Price’s visionary architectural concepts. Together, these exhibitions provide a unique opportunity to reflect on the intersections of industry, society, and innovation.
The Birmingham School of Architecture and Design is proud to host this exhibition, which reflects our commitment to fostering critical and creative explorations of identity and society. Emily’s compelling vision challenges and inspires through a blend of technical expertise and cultural commentary.
