Clearing Stories

Our students share their Clearing stories and how they felt throughout the whole experience as well as giving you tips and advice for applying this year.

Iuri Jacinto Manuel

Education Studies - BA

Iuri originally studied accounting at a university outside of Birmingham. When he realised it wasn’t for him, he thought he had lost his chance to go to university. When he found out about Clearing, he knew he wanted to apply to BCU to study a subject he was passionate about closer to home.

Kimberly Gill

Diagnostic Radiography – BSc

Kimberly was unsuccessful in getting a place at university in the main cycle and wasn’t really sure what to do next. By chance, she saw that her dream course was available through Clearing and knew she’d been given a second chance to achieve her goals.

Nicholas Harfield

Learning Disability Nursing with foundation year – BSc

Nicholas was offered a place at a university, but it didn’t feel like the right choice for him. He took a chance and rang BCU on results day to see if there were any Nursing places available. Even though he hadn’t originally considered Learning Disability Nursing, it turned out to be exactly what he was looking for.

Emily Hartill

Media Production - BA

After applying to universities that were far away from home, Emily decided to apply to one closer to home through Clearing so she could continue caring for her disabled mother.

Shanza Naeem

Biomedical sciences - BSc

Shanza moved to the UK only a couple of years before starting university and knew she wanted to study in the medical field. After missing the UCAS deadline and not getting the results she had hoped for in college, she found her dream course through Clearing.

Henry Kingdon

Applied Theatre - BA

Henry went from studying highly academic courses at a grammar school, applying to universities with high entry requirements, to not meeting his grades and changing his career path completely. Clearing gave Henry the opportunity to start a degree that was actually right for him without the pressure of his past and his mental health influencing his studies.

Syed Kumayl Mehmood

Business Management - BA

With a dream of running his own fruit business in Pakistan, Syed was anxious to find out he had missed the UCAS deadline after deferring for a year. Now, Syed is working towards his goals by landing a place on the Business Management course through Clearing.

Samantha Dowling

Nursing - Mental Health and Child - MSCI

Mum of four, Samantha, took it upon herself to start a degree in an area she’s passionate about, due to her life experiences. Juggling family life can sometimes make you lose sight of what you have time for, the wellness team at BCU have helped Samantha balance family life and be in full-time education.

Joshua Reid

Landscape Architecture - BA

After feeling welcomed and inspired at an Open Day, Joshua knew BCU was the place for him. He rejected his first-choice university to apply to BCU and found it’s the best decision he’s ever made.

Elliot Hambleton

Mechanical Engineering with foundation year - BEng

Elliot was left disappointed and confused on results day, but Clearing gave him the chance to still study his dream course with a foundation year. The foundation year gave Elliot time to prepare for his course and new independent lifestyle, so he was ready to jump into his engineering degree.

Gayathiry Jeyapragash

Civil Engineering - BENG

Gayathiry came to the UK as an asylum seeker to further her studies after having a turbulent time at home in Sri Lanka. As a mature student with a child, Clearing gave Gayathiry a chance to study Engineering at BCU.
