Martin completed a BEd in Mathematics at Sheffield Hallam University and began his teaching career at a Secondary school in Sandwell. He worked in a number of schools across the West Midlands, before spending 8 years at Perry Beeches School, firstly as 2nd in Mathematics and Gifted and talented co-ordinator, before becoming Head of Mathematics Faculty for four years.

Martin then moved onto work as a Senior Lecturer in Mathematics Education at Birmingham City University, teaching on the PGCE Secondary, BA Primary and SKE in Mathematics courses for four years. During this period Martin completed his MA in Education, researching the impact of the Interactive Whiteboard in the Mathematics classroom.  He also secured funding from the Teaching Agency to provide CPD for serving and returning teachers, supporting teachers of mathematics who were non-maths specialists.

Martin returned to working in Secondary schools in 2012, taking up a post as Assistant Principal at a school in Dudley with responsibility for assessment, data and exams.

After 5 years back in school, Martin has returned to work at Birmingham City University as a Senior Lecturer in Mathematics Education.
