Professor Alkhatib is a world-leading expert in lifestyle medicine, with a 30-year career at top academic, clinical and industry roles, combining the disciplines of public health, nutrition and exercise sciences. Professor Alkhatib's most recent role was leading Preventative Healthcare and Doctorate of Health Program at Teesside University.
He previously developed successful accredited research and academic programs in exercise, nutrition and health sciences across the UK (Essex, Suffolk, Sheffield Hallam, Lincoln, and Greenwich Universities), and internationally (Distinguished Professor of Sport Nutrition, Taipei University, Taiwan; Head of Sport Science Department, Qatar University; Head of Epidemiology and Public Health, Dasman Diabetes Institute; Head of Exercise science Division, Abertay-Dundee University, Scotland).
Professor Alkhatib currently leads the Public Health Cluster research at Birmingham City University, with key strengths on ageing, metabolic disease, and multimorbidity prevention. He applied lifestyle nutrition and exercise interventions using both randomised trials, and epidemiological cohort approaches, to successfully reverse and manage obesity-comorbidities, type-2 diabetes, cancer, vascular disease in high-risk individuals of all age groups (children and adolescents with obesity comorbidities, older adults with pre-diabetes, postmenopausal women, young adults with severe obesity). His novel discoveries include nutraceuticals’ reversal of metabolic endotoxicity in prediabetic women, adapting high-intensity exercise in diabetes; antiviral functional foods, exercise enhanced nutraceuticals for ageing and longevity, dietary supplements to restore cellular homeostasis, applicability of whole diets across global populations (e.g. Mediterranean, ketogenic and plant-based diets), and reducing health population disparity.
Professor Alkhatib’s research has been implemented in scientific and commercial domains and impacted government, global health, sport and nutrition policies. He led and generated over £10 million of research, facility and academic funds. He served as an accrediting panel chair, funding expert-reviewer (NIHR, MRC, NIH Hong Kong, ANSSH), health-policy advisor, and editor for several high-impact journals. Professor Alkhatib published over 200 top outputs, including three books and sixteen book chapters.
Professor Alkhatib is an executive of the Asian Nutrition Society for Sport and Health (ANSSH), Fellow of Royal Society of Medicine (FRSM), Royal Society of Public Health (FRSPH), Higher Education Academy (FHEA), Registered Nutritionist (RNutr), and clinical physiologist.
