Alex graduated from the University of Sunderland in 1997 with a BSc (Hons) in Pharmacology. He then went on to complete a MSc in Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Aberdeen in 1998, and then attained a PhD in Molecular Pharmacology from Nottingham Trent University, graduating in 2003.

Alex’s first postdoctoral position was at the University of Rochester, New York, investigating the potentially positive effect of antioxidants in cardiovascular disease. Then, he went back to the University of Aberdeen, to investigate the role of eosinophils in asthma.

Alex started his first lecturer position at Robert Gordon University in 2009, teaching pharmacology to pharmacy students. He then moved back to Nottingham Trent University in 2010, teaching pharmacology on a number of biomedical-based courses there. And finally, he moved to Birmingham City University in 2019, as a lecturer in Biomedical Sciences.
