Marie completed her undergraduate studies in Biomedical Science at the University of Birmingham in 2010. She was awarded a Wellcome Trust PhD studentship in the field of Immunology and remained at the University to study in the Institute of Inflammation and Ageing. Her PhD focus was the biology of T lymphocytes in the blood and central nervous system (CNS).

A postdoctoral position at the University of Oxford introduced Marie to clinical diagnostics. Here she worked in a hospital laboratory where patients with very rare autoimmune neurological diseases could be tested and diagnosed. In 2016 Marie took an industry role as an R&D scientist at Abingdon Health in Birmingham. Here she worked contract development of lateral flow diagnostic tests for a variety of infectious diseases and cancers.

In 2017 Marie joined Micropathology Ltd, a private clinical diagnostics company based at the University of Warwick science park. Here she led the company’s research activities and oversaw diagnostic work for multiple international research consortia. Her contributions to the EU-funded PERFORM and DIAMONDS projects are recognized in the Consortia’s high impact publications. During the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, Marie worked with the Micropathology team to support the UK’s PCR testing capacity.

Marie joined BCU as a lecturer in 2023, with a desire to return to academia and pursue an interest in teaching. Marie currently leads the Biomedical Sciences L6 Immunology module and is laying the foundations for infectious disease diagnostic research at BCU. In 2024 she leads a C-LaSS funded project examining monocyte responses within diagnostic tests for Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
