Currently in her Foundation Year at BCU, Emily Byrne (pictured) qualified for the prestigious event, which runs from 23-27 July, after getting into the sport after lockdown.

The 19-year-old from Solihull only competed for the first time in February 2023 but has enjoyed a meteoric rise in a short space of time.

Not only has she become a British champion, but she also achieved second place at both the European and World Championships last year.

“Being at BCU with so much support and encouragement makes it so special,” said Emily of her selection for the World University Championships.

She will be taking part in the under 69kg category in Estonia and hopes more women will be inspired to get involved in the sport.

“I want to use this opportunity to showcase my strength to inspire others,” she said.

“There’s a misconception about it being a male dominated sport, but there are so many benefits and it’s a really friendly community.

“One of my biggest worries when starting out was the fear of being judged by others. But the powerlifting community were so supportive and motivating.

“To anyone who wants to start powerlifting, remember to enjoy the journey, embrace the challenges and find the positives in every workout.”
