Professor Maxine Lintern

Interim Pro Vice-Chancellor Research

Professor Maxine Lintern has been the interim Pro Vice-Chancellor Research since April 2024. Maxine provides strategic leadership for research and knowledge exchange across the University, to achieve the ambitions in the University’s Strategy for 2030 and Beyond.

Maxine joined Birmingham City University (BCU) in 2008 as Associate Dean for Learning Teaching, Research, and Innovation in the Faculty of Health, Education, and Life Sciences. She has held several other senior roles at BCU including Associate Dean for Research and Innovation in the Faculty of Business, Law and Social Sciences, Acting Head of the Law School, and most recently the Deputy Dean for the Faculty of Health, Education and Life Sciences. Before joining BCU, she was the Director of Learning and Teaching at the University of Birmingham.

She has a wealth of experience in PhD supervision and examination across many subject areas and has a proficiency at collaborating with teams across different disciplines, working with Universities, NHS trusts, industry, and overseeing international projects.

Maxine trained as a Medical Biochemist and was awarded a PhD in Medicine and Neurophysiology from the University of Birmingham Medical School. Her research interests range from medical science, bioengineering, cognitive psychology, use of science in the law and leadership, patient care, and clinical outcomes, to digital educational projects with an impact on the student experience here and across the world.

Maxine is a Principal Fellow of the Advance Higher Education Academy and Chair of the Athena Swan Steering Committee and is committed to gaining equity in academia and health, and improving public science literacy.
