Technician Commitment

Our Commitment to Supporting Technicians

Birmingham City University (BCU) is proud to support the Technician Commitment, a nationwide initiative led by sector bodies and hosted by the UK Institute for Technical Skills and Strategy. Since its launch in 2017, this vital initiative has grown to include over 100 signatories and is shaping the future of the technical workforce in higher education and research.

The Technician Commitment is focused on ensuring Visibility, Recognition, Career Development and Sustainability of Skills for technicians.

Enhancing student experience

These professionals play a crucial role in enhancing the student experience by supporting academic staff, sharing practical skills, and providing hands-on knowledge through demonstrations, workshops, and one-on-one guidance.

They are a consistent source of expertise and support, helping students thrive throughout their studies.

A dedicated community

At BCU, we are proud to have a dedicated community of technical specialists embedded within every faculty.

These technicians contribute significantly to teaching and learning in key areas, drawing on their expertise and practical experience to develop and deliver practice-based teaching that enriches the academic journey for students.

Supporting and empowering

BCU formally signed up to the Technician Commitment in March 2024. Since this point, we have developed our first 24-month Action Plan to ensure we fully support and empower our technical workforce. This plan focuses on celebrating their achievements, enhancing their visibility, and ensuring they continue to play an integral role in education and the student experience at our institution.

Our Action Plan

Technicians, academics, professional services staff, and leadership have contributed to this initial two-year action plan to help set a direction for the Technician Commitment at BCU.
