UNIVERSITY NEWS LAST UPDATED : 12 AUGUST 2015
Students looking for a university course in Clearing will be able to receive course offers via social media tomorrow by contacting Birmingham City University via Twitter – @MyBCU – and Facebook.
Birmingham City University is introducing the innovation to help students to beat the telephone rush and to offer an alternative approach for those anxious about their options shortly after receiving their A-level results tomorrow morning.
The social media service opens alongside the University's Clearing telephone hotline from 7am on Thursday morning, staying open until 7pm. Last year the hotline received over 3,000 calls on the first day of Clearing.
"We've seen a huge rise in course enquiries from prospective students via social media in recent months, and for this reason we'll be making offers on Facebook and Twitter during this year's Clearing period," said Bashir Makhoul, Pro-Vice-Chancellor at Birmingham City University.
"We're even opening up additional places on some of our flagship courses this year, which students can look to secure a place on by tweeting us at @MyBCU from 7am on Thursday morning."
Prospective students seeking a place on a course through social media are asked to private message the University via Facebook or Twitter with their name and contact details, UCAS points (including subjects and grades) and the exact name of the course they're interested in.
Popular courses with additional places made available include fashion, jewellery, criminology, business and engineering.
