Alex King

Alex King is lecturer on the BA Interior Architecture and Design course. She has a MA in Architecture from the University of Edinburgh, a Part II Graduate Diploma from the University of Westminster, and is a Fellow of the HEA.

Alex has worked within architectural practice and interior design across various locations including London, New York and Birmingham. The majority of her time in practice was spent working on heritage and educational projects for international practice Hawkins\Brown, and within the hospitality sector for StudioIlse. She has worked on two RIBA award winning projects, Hackney Town Hall and the Bob Champion Education and Research building, overseeing the interior design within a larger design team.

She has worked in academia for the past 8 years and her teaching combines her knowledge and experience from practice with her pedagogical research and interests. Her academic research revolves around theories of service and experiential learning. Working in partnership with Birmingham Youth Services, she is currently running multiple research-led projects with BCU design students and local manufacturers. Her field of enquiry focuses on the United Nations ‘Learning City’, discovering how exposure to live clients and disadvantaged community groups can improve student engagement, development and success. She is a member of the Creative Pedagogies and Practices research cluster and presents her work at conferences and cluster engagement meetings.

Alex is the industry lead for the BA Interior Architecture course overseeing industry participation across year levels. She develops and maintains industry partner relationships including organising 3rd year work placement and orchestrating live projects.

Alex is currently coordinating a peer observation scheme roll out across the School of Architecture which originated from her PGCert action research project, fostering collaborative staff learning, observation and CPD development.
