Dr Hocine Bougdah has an academic and industrial career that extends over 31 years. He recently joined the University as a Director for Technical Studies and Sustainability. Prior to this, he was a Senior Research Fellow in the School of Architecture and Cities at the University of Westminster, London and a research/educational consultant with IEREK (Egypt). As part of his academic career, he filled many positions at various levels of responsibility including course director, subject group leader, subject area leader and departmental research coordinator.

Alongside his academic roles, he has always been actively involved in various aspects of design related practice and consultancy services as well as services for public bodies (Homes and Community Agency, the Rural Research and Strategy Partnership, South-East, the Royal Society for the Arts, etc.)

Being a passionate about sustainability as a driver for both the design process and the learning/teaching approaches, he makes use of hands-on approaches to learning such as exploring through making and testing (of ideas) through design.

His research interests focus on the technological, ecological and human/cultural aspects of sustainable architecture. His recent research projects are interested in two facets of sustainable design. The first one is looking at low energy, low cost, low impact solutions (projects include the experimental low energy house and the use of PV panels for both energy efficiency and visual impact in newly built and refurbished buildings). The second stream of his research looks at the role of users as participants in the design/communication processes and community driven projects with a view to empower communities to address climate change mitigation (projects include community driven projects in the global south, the role of culture in informing the design of urban dwellings, the use of interactive communication in the design process as a way for participatory design/consultation).

His involvement in scholarly activities is through his membership of various learned societies (The RSA, IOA, ACADIA, HEA, IEREK) and editorial boards for a number of international journals (The Journal for Environmental Science and Sustainable Development, Sustainability, The Journal of Islamic Architecture) and on the review panel of some 15 international journals (including the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America and the International Review for Spatial Planning and Sustainable Development among others) as well as keynote speaking at various international conferences.

He is the recipient of the Lux Europa best conference paper for young researchers, Budapest (1989). Other honours include getting an entry into the Who’s Who for Science and Engineering (2009) and long listed for the RIBA International Book Award (2007).
