Jane Anderson

Jane Anderson is Course Leader for BA (Hons) Graphic Design at Birmingham City University. She has a BA (Hons) in Fine Art (1998), and an MA in Art and Design: Interdisciplinary Practice (2020). She is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), and has taught on the BA Graphic Design course since 2009, working with students across all stages of the course. She has over 20 years of industry experience, working at Creative Director level, both independently and as part of large organisations such as the NHS.

As a passionate educator, active design practitioner, and researcher, Jane contributes to renewal and richness in the creative industry both locally and nationally. Her knowledge and experience of the sector is extensive; something she brings to the students and academic network, resulting in key collaborations with partners and industry.

Students have and always will be at the centre of Jane’s approach, and they are key to her vision of developing the course in an inclusive and exciting way. She is particularly passionate about closing the gender pay gap, and enabling students from diverse communities to enter the creative industries. In 2019, Jane won Inspirational Tutor of the Year for the ADM faculty at BCU; an accolade that she is especially proud of.

Jane has also been instrumental in developing our enterprise and employability strategy within the School of Visual Communication through initiatives such as the Keep Track alumni network and the peer-assisted mentoring scheme.

She has also initiated a number of extra-curricular activities such as Friday Night Lights, Coffee Lounge and Type Society. These help forge vital industry links and provide additional stimulating learning environments for students.
