Paul Lander
2005 to present day:
As Senior Lecturer in Photography, my overriding aim is to initiate creative pathways of study that will take the student into a journey to fulfil future aspirations and vocations. This pathway of study is intended to contest notions and perceptions of the norm, to creatively experiment and oppose the literal and to move hearts and minds to challenge issues that arise in visualizing life. I have always dedicated my teaching and practice to conceptual elaboration specializing in experimental landscape and documentary. I encourage investigation into traditional and encourage alternative new approaches and, observe and question our belief of the final outcome with the exploratory understanding and knowledge gained via the creative pedagogic experience.
1983 to 2005:
Professionally: I worked as a technical demonstrator in photography at BCU that led to me becoming Principal Technician. My initial training and qualifications are as a studio practitioner. I worked in my own commercial photographic consultancy up until 2002 (Redhead) for many years. My client list included British Nuclear Fuels Ltd, National Health Service, Mitchell & Butlers (Bass), Saucony and the BBC.
My current research project is entitled ‘How green was my valley’. This proposal is a photographic study of an urban encompassed area in the West Midlands called the Sandwell Valley. It intends to be a landscape documentary, observing the many historical facets and metaphoric layers that contribute to the valley’s existence in its historic and present day form.
