Melanie is an educator and independent jewellery designer/maker with an individual style of jewellery that is handmade in precious metals to a high standard. Melanie is consistently involved in projects relating to her field; teaching, research, writing, and curation are examples. Experience of living, studying and working in a variety of cultural contexts and institutions has leant versatility to her approach; she is adept at working within the industry from hands on approach in trade and manufacturing through to critical writing about contemporary jewellery.
She has over 15 years of experience as an educator in Further and Higher Education. The development and growth of her work as an educator has been in tandem with the development of her creative practice and industry involvement. With 25+ years working in the jewellery industry, this industry experience took her back and forth to South Asia for 6 years initially with Turquoise Mountain’s Institute for Afghan Arts and Architecture in Kabul, Afghanistan, supported by the British Council, and then continued work with both organisations, and others through India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Thailand.
Melanie sees her working practice as an example of a comprehensive and industry tailored approach and has undertaken contracts with institutions and corporations as varied as Swarovski, the DeBeers Group, the Victoria & Albert Museum, the British Council, the Aga Khan Foundation, The Crafts Council, The National Gallery and The Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths’.
She is currently involved in a number of initiatives looking at supporting diversity within the jewellery trade and craft. In addition to her more formal roles as trustee or board member for a handful of organisations she serves, she is also assists in an advisory capacity for a number of industry organisations both in the UK and abroad.
