Accounting and Finance graduate, Maddison Metcalfe, talks to us about going from struggling with her workload to becoming a first-class graduate.
What is your current role?
At Birmingham City University, I studied Accounting and Finance with a foundation year. Currently, I work as an Audit, Accounts, and Tax Junior, while also studying for the ACT/CTA qualification with ICAEW.
Why did you choose to study at BCU?
The course offered accredited modules with professional accounting bodies, which I knew would be beneficial for my future studies and professional qualifications. The university provided a strong practical and academic framework that aligned with my career goals.
How did BCU help you to obtain your current role?
BCU played a significant role in helping me secure my current position by equipping me with the skills to study independently. I had always struggled with revising and found it difficult to manage my workload. However, using past papers as a revision tool really helped, and I was able to build the confidence to apply these skills in a professional setting. Additionally, some teachers at BCU made learning more engaging, which made a big difference for me, especially when studying complicated modules.
Tell us what a typical work day is like for you
In my current role, my day-to-day tasks vary significantly. I alternate between working in the audit, accounts, and tax departments. On some days, I am fully focused on client audits, while on others, I work on accounts or assist in tax planning and compliance. My schedule also includes time spent attending college to continue my ACT/CTA studies, which keeps my weeks busy.
Do you have any standout moments from your time at university?
A standout moment during my studies was when I realised that I might be able to achieve a first-class degree. That realisation gave me a surge of motivation, and I set it as my goal. This personal achievement drove me to work harder and focus on getting the best results possible – which I did and was awarded a first.
Do you have any advice for current or future Accounting and Finance students?
For anyone considering a similar course or career path, I would recommend making the most of the resources available to you—whether it's past papers, lecturer support, or study groups. Staying organised and developing effective study habits early on will also serve you well, both at university and in your professional life. Moreover, choosing modules that align with your long-term career goals, especially those accredited by professional bodies, can give you an edge as you move into the workplace.
