Why I Chose to Study Accounting and Finance

Accounting and Finance student Mariam Hussain discusses why she chose Birmingham City University.

When I was choosing which university I wanted to study at, like most students I wasn't yet sure about what career I wanted to pursue either, meaning I wasn't 100% sure what degree I wanted to do.  

My strategy towards picking my course was simple. I reflected on the subjects I enjoyed the most and excelled at during my GCSEs. I enjoyed Mathematics and Business Studies the most. During the UCAS application process, I took help from career advisors from my college. With some further research, I chose to do an Accounting and Finance course because it had excellent graduate prospects. From my research, I found that Accounting and Finance graduates had a greater chance of being professionally employed within 6 months of leaving university.

I eventually chose to go for an Accounting and Finance degree. Many universities offer this course, but I decided to study at Birmingham City University after I attended the open days the University provided. BCU attracted me not only because of the tremendous support they provide to their students but also because you get to choose the modules you want to study. This makes sure you equip yourself with the knowledge and skills that can enable you to build and progress in a professional career that you are passionate about.  

As long as businesses exist, there always will be a demand for accountants, therefore it is a very reliable degree option. This degree will also allow me to build a career I am passionate about, rather than just settling for regular job I don't care too much about.  

Many Graduate schemes are available for this degree, which I saw as a potential opportunity to work for an already established company with a structured training programme and clear career progression. Overall, a degree in Accounting and Finance is very valuable, as it gives you knowledge and skills useful in a global marketplace.
