Looking to pursue a career in Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths (STEM) and have a flair for creativity or the arts? Some of our degrees combine technical skills such as computing and programming, with the opportunity for students to be creative. From producing music, to designing cities, to creating creatures and environments through visual effects, we explore some of the more creative degrees in STEM.

BSc (Hons) Computer Games Technology

Want to be computer games developer? In this course, you’ll deep-dive into 2D and 3D graphics rendering, physics, artificial intelligence and human-computer interaction which are required for the development of high-end computer games platforms. Develop fundamental skills in designing, developing, and programming 2D and 3D games and learn to develop innovative ‘game-based’ solutions to a diverse range of scenarios. You’ll study in our state-of-the-art computer games technology lab, kitted with high-performance PCs with dual monitors and cutting-edge GPUs, Sony PlayStation, XBOX and Nintendo Switch development kits, as well as a variety of industry standard software.

BSc (Hons) Digital Film Production

Love everything about film? In this course, you’ll explore the fundamentals of technology in film, from narrative, composition and film theory to camera testing, designing digital production workflows and post-production. Bridging the gap between technology specialists and creative artists, you’ll be well-equipped to perform a variety of craft roles within film, television and video production. With the university’s cutting edge facilities and software, including our Parkside Media Centre, you’ll focus on technical concepts including the physics of sound and light during production (and the tools and techniques required to do this), as well as the technology used to digitally store and manipulate images and audio in post-production.

BSc (Hons) Digital Media Computing

Interested in digital media and content creation? This course creates versatile graduates with a mix of computing, technical and content creation skills. It combines computing and digital media, covering everything from coding to animation. You’ll also explore web application development, digital media processing, media production and 3D modelling and animation. Learn about the underlying principles of computer science, as well as visual design and human computer interaction, to solve society’s problems with creative technology.

BSc (Hons) Music Technology

Got a passion for music and sound? Aimed at the technical music producer, this course will train you to use technology to create, record and distribute music. You’ll leave with a valuable blend of creative ability and practical skills in music production, alongside solid business awareness and a strong understanding of technology. Our graduates have successfully entered the music and audio industry in production, sound design and audio through to technical development, acoustic consultancy and education. 

BSc (Hons) Visual Effects

Do you have a background in computer science or simply interested in film, games and CGI? This course will develop your technical, creative and production skills and will prepare you to pursue careers in a range of roles within visual effects, games and other innovative industries utilising computer graphics. Learn about all aspects of visual effects production including: shooting video, computer modelling, computer animation. Learn how to create epic destruction and explosions (known as ‘FX’ dynamic effects and simulations), and learn how to put this all back together to create a complete shot (known as compositing). You’ll use these skills to produce digital elements such as creatures and environments and learn how to combine them with live action video to produce convincing visual effects shots.

BSc (Hons) Architectural Technology

BSc (Hons) Architectural Technology is where the science of construction meets the art of design. Accredited by the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT), the course focuses not only on the creation of the built environment, but also the structuring of space in and around it. Develop your ability to appreciate and analyse existing design and learn how to construct designs of your own using CAD in a three-dimensional format. You’ll also be kept up to date with the latest skills, such as Building Information Modelling (BIM) and will be actively involved in the creation of a BIM model for a prestigious UK building.
