Being in the heart of Birmingham City Centre is not only great for local amenities, but also being close to potential employers too. We work closely with companies such as Cisco, Amazon, Microsoft, Unity, and Rare, Kwalee and Sony, as well as local agencies such as Big Marketing and Edge Creative.
State-of-the-art facilities
Computer Games Technology: While studying your computer games degree, you will use our state-of-the-art computer games technology lab, which is kitted with high-performance PCs with dual monitors and cutting edge GPUs, Sony PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and XBox development kits, as well as a variety of industry standard software.
Our collaborations with Microsoft, Unity and Sony, coupled with our state-of-the-art technology will help you develop the skills you need to be successful in the games industry and beyond.
Digital Media Technology: You’ll study with support of the latest in digital media technology equipment. This includes digital TV studios, edit and dubbing suites.
We are a Cisco Academy Support Centre and one of only 10 Cisco Instructor Training centres in the UK, which means you will have access to Cisco industry-standard facilities and training resources.
Access to these industry-standard facilities means that you will graduate with employable skills and be equipped to go into the workplace.
Learn from experts
Computer Games Technology course leader, Dr Carlo Harvey is actively involved in games and graphics research and brings a wealth of award-winning experience to the course. His course has previously won the TIGA Award for Best Education Institution, and has been nominated several times since. Carlo has worked with Jaguar Land Rover on a project aimed to drive digital prototyping forward and construction magnate ARUP on learning from virtual spaces to better inform their space design.
Digital Media Computing course leader, Sandeep Chahil is an expert in digital video production and has worked as a freelance video editor. Sandeep has great connections with local agencies, including Edge Creative.
Placement experience
You have the option to do a 30-week placement in industry, or a one-year optional placement year between your second and final year, so that you can make your CV stand out from the crowd when you graduate. We have a Careers+ department dedicated to supporting you find placements, graduate jobs, and offer support with your CV and making applications.
Accredited courses
BSc (Hons) Computer Games Technology has been accredited by TIGA, the non-profit trade association representing the video games industry. The accreditation indicates that the course has been assessed and produces industry-ready graduates for the gaming sector.
Societies
Our Students Union has many societies you can join, or set up your own! Hackathon and Computing Society (HaCS) and Film Society are just a few that you can join to get involved in events, workshops and social sessions. Each society is led by a team of student volunteers, and you can join at any point throughout your time here.
International Events
We regularly participate in international game development competitions such as Global Games Jam and Microsoft’s Imagine Cup, to give you the opportunities to showcase your experience to employers and network with industry. We also run Hackathon events throughout the year and Innovation Fest, where you can collaborate with students across the University, display your work to industry, such as Santander - and have the opportunity to win funding and prizes!
WISE
We are passionate about gender balance in science and technology, which is why we are official members of WISE.
Coupled with this agenda we also have representatives from within the faculty acting as Ambassadors for the Women in Games initiative. These links allow our students to actively participate in events that encourage and promote engagement from women and girls in STEM related areas. Examples include the UK University Diversity in eSports Conference 2020 hosted by Women in Games.
STEAMhouse
Based at our expanding City Centre Campus, our brand new £70 million pound building, STEAMhouse, is a unique centre with outstanding facilities and equipment, as well as opportunities to collaborate with people and businesses across multiple sectors and work on real industry-based projects.
