What is it like studying MSc Construction Project Management?

Jasmine and Ajay are two students studying MSc Construction Project Management. Find out about why they chose the course, how they have found it and any tips they would give to future students.

Why did you decide to study a postgraduate course in the UK?

Ajay: I am a graduate with a BA in Architecture from India, and I am a registered architect back in India. I did my internship programme in Stuttgart, going to an international platform, which motivated me to learn more about the field from different countries.

My curiosity and urge to learn more about the field I have studied as a graduate made me pursue this. While graduating, I aimed to pursue higher studies in architecture. Learning and practising made me realise that there are more directions to my subject of interest.

While working in architecture, my curiosity arose for the construction part. Then, I became interested in learning how this architecture and construction part is managed on-site. My curiosity and urge to learn more made me motivated to join the course at BCU.

Jasmine: As a practising architect in Tanzania, I recognised the need to expand my experience and exposure in construction management, particularly given the booming construction industry in the country. Gaining this expertise will provide me with a niche in the market and allow me to further advance my career goals.

I have always wanted to pursue a master's degree, particularly in a management-related course, but I did not pursue it immediately after completing my undergraduate studies. After practising for over 2 years as an architect in my country, I developed a strong interest in construction project management and decided to pursue it in the UK. I researched different universities, and BCU particularly caught my eye, especially since I had relatives who completed their master's degrees there and highly recommended it.

How are you finding being a postgraduate student at BCU?

Ajay: Being a postgraduate student at BCU is a transformative experience. The course modules are meticulously designed to blend academic rigor with real-world application. The lecturers are not just educators, but active industry professionals who bring current insights and practical expertise into the classroom. This ensures that I am not only learning the latest theories but also applying them to real projects, preparing me to step confidently into the professional world. I feel like I am engaging with a curriculum that’s deeply connected to industry demands, making my education immediately relevant and positioning myself to excel in my career from day one.

Jasmine: It has been a fulfilling experience with extensive exposure and access to current study materials. The lecturers are very supportive, and the courses are well-tailored to meet students' needs. Being a postgraduate student also means learning to become a critical thinker, which is an essential skill in today's world.

What’s been most challenging about being a postgraduate student and how have you overcome these challenges?

Ajay: Returning to academia after three years as an architect was challenging, especially transitioning from the creative, conceptual world of architecture to the more detailed and application-focused field of Construction Project Management. Initially, I was nervous about coping with the new subject matter. However, the professors at BCU changed my perspective, breaking down complex concepts into understandable details. Their guidance has been extremely valuable.

Jasmine: The most challenging aspect for me has been learning how to write academically. As a postgraduate student, your writing must demonstrate critical thinking and progressive ideas. I developed these skills gradually through feedback from my assessments and reading online resources on how to write academically.

What opportunities and support have you had to boost your career prospects?

Ajay: My degree includes a six-month professional placement, which will significantly boost my career prospects. The university also has a Careers+ service, which assists with CV development, LinkedIn profile checks, and job updates.

Additionally, workshops by organisations like CIOB, ICE, and RICS offer industry knowledge and free student memberships. This allows us to participate in site visits and interact with leading construction managers. Being near the HS2 project, the largest site in the UK, also offers invaluable real-world exposure to the construction industry.

Jasmine: The university has networking opportunities to connect with potential employers for both part-time jobs during studies and full-time employment after completing the course, which I have taken advantage of.

What advice would you give to others thinking about postgraduate study?

Ajay: My advice for those considering postgraduate study, particularly in Construction Project Management, is to have a solid foundation in architecture or civil engineering. These basics are crucial for excelling in the course. If you lack a construction background, be aware that securing placements can be challenging, especially in the UK.

Passion for learning, confidence, site experience, teamwork, stress management, creativity, and digital software skills are essential. The course’s complexity depends on your prior knowledge and your ability to adapt to the industry's demands.

Jasmine: I would advise you to work for a few years at an established construction firm to gain exposure and understand key concepts of construction, particularly project management. This experience will make it easier to cope with the modules and relate what you learn to practical applications. Working in the field allows you to observe real-world practices and identify challenges, which can also inspire you to choose meaningful research topics and seek potential solutions.
