Why you should study Education in Birmingham

Why should you study an Education degree in Birmingham? Read on to find out.

There’s lots to learn in and around Birmingham

No matter what type of teacher you aspire to be, the city has a wealth of resources that can help you to educate both yourself and your future students. Educational places to visit range from museums, art galleries, zoo’s, nature walks, and plenty more. Some of our top picks include Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, the Black Country Museum, and Thinktank Birmingham Science Museum, which is situated right within our City Centre Campus.

During your time studying, you will get to participate in visits and attend talks from guest speakers that come from organisations such as Historic England, CBSO, and the aforementioned Thinktank.

Facilities and placements

Our £71 million City South Campus in Edgbaston is the home of all our Education courses, alongside state-of-the-art facilities that include specialist equipment that can be used for the teaching of primary and secondary science, design and technology, computing, art, physical education, drama, music, and more. This means you will get the chance to prepare for working life in a professional environment.

Not only will these facilities help aspiring teachers, but also the plethora of other careers that fall under the education sector such as care work, therapy, mentoring, support work and much more.

You will have plenty of placement opportunities, with most of our Education courses requiring you to undertake a placement that has a duration of at least eight weeks, no matter what area you are looking to go into. In fact, we have partnerships and strong industry links with over 100 schools, colleges, and training organisations across the West Midlands. Placements will be a crucial part of your course and will allow you to develop not only your professional skills, but also your confidence working with others.

Cultural Diversity

Birmingham is one of the most diverse cities in the UK and is even more ethnically diverse than London. This means you will have the opportunity to work with individuals from all walks of life and with varied cultural backgrounds. This is valuable experience to have, as it will empower you to teach diverse topics and be inclusive of every individual within your education career.

At BCU, we are committed to our approach to equality, diversity, and inclusion, meaning we support both staff and students within the institute and ensure everyone receives the same opportunities, as well as eliminating discriminatory practices. Influential teachers

Being the second biggest city in the UK, there’s no surprise that Birmingham is home to so many opportunities, and that is no different when it comes to education roles. There are a vast number of schools both within the city centre and the surrounding areas, as well as care homes, clinics, medical practices, and more. There’s no need to worry about moving away to find a job after you finish your course!

Because of this, Birmingham is home to many inspiring and change-making teachers. A recent Get Into Teaching survey revealed that four out of five people in Birmingham believe school teachers are very influential on the lives of others – if you study with us, you could become part of this.
