Blog

Engineering is a vast and exciting field, offering a variety of career paths for an exciting future. Here at Birmingham City University, we understand that choosing the right engineering degree can be a tough decision. We hope that this blog will guide you through the different engineering courses we offer, helping you find the perfect fit for your interests and goals.

In simple terms, engineering is all about applying science and mathematics to solve real-world problems. Engineers design, build, maintain, and improve everything from buildings and bridges to electronic devices and cars.

At BCU, we offer three main degrees in engineering which include: Automotive Engineering, Electronic Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. Each course provides a strong foundation in engineering principles, while also focusing on a specific area.

Automotive Engineering

Key Topics:

  • Powertrain systems (engines and transmissions)
  • Suspension and steering
  • Body engineering
  • Stress analysis
  • Design and management

This course is designed to prepare you for a career in the fast-paced automotive industry, which is undergoing a major transformation towards electric and hybrid vehicles. You'll gain the skills to design, develop, test, and improve all aspects of modern cars. In this course, there is an emphasis on project-based learning, where you'll work in teams on real-world projects, from initial design to implementation. You'll also have the chance to learn from industry experts and potentially join the BCU Formula Student racing team, getting hands-on experience building a racing car.

Electronic Engineering

Key Topics:

  • Electronic circuits and systems
  • Microprocessors and microcontrollers
  • Robotics and automation
  • Communication systems

If you're fascinated by electronics and gadgets, this course is for you. You'll delve into the science behind everything from smartphones and computers to medical equipment and robots. The program equips you with the skills to design, build, and test electronic devices, while also considering the social and environmental impact of your work. Similar to other BCU engineering courses, you'll gain practical experience through project-based learning and have the opportunity to participate in engineering competitions.
