Degrees you can study if you are creative

Blog

Creativity comes in many shapes and sizes, some of which you might not be aware of or tried your hand at yet. At BCU, we offer a wide range of creative degrees that fit an array of skill sets.

Fashion Design

Do you express yourself through your clothing? Love experimenting with pieces to create new outfits? Handy with a sewing machine? If so, a fashion design degree might suit you well.

This course not only gives you a comprehensive fashion design education, but also encourages innovation in both design skills and technical craftsmanship with a focus on sustainability, system thinking and socioeconomic practice.

We have built a reputation for students entering the industry as original, creative, independent thinking employable designers. Our award-winning graduate portfolios and fashion collections are showcased on international, digital, and local west-midland based platforms.

Textile Design

Textile Design might suit you if you are intrigued by materials, patterns and textures, and like creating things using a variety of disciplines. Our Textile Design course nurtures fresh thinking and industry-ready designers and practitioners with expertise in the craftsmanship across the use of print, weave, knit, embroidery and material innovation.

Creative play and problem-solving are at the heart of learning and you will be guided by experienced staff as you discover your own personal expression through the language of design – colour, pattern, surface, texture and image.

If you are new to fashion and textiles and aren’t sure which one to pick, there are several differences between the two courses

Jewellery

Jewellery making is a unique creative skill that you might not have considered studying.

We have several jewellery courses that are designed for creative individuals, where you willlearn traditional craftsmanship, contemporary design processes and techniques and entrepreneurial skills from experienced industry experts.

Our jewellery courses are nationally and internationally respected and give you the freedom to develop your own creativity by encouraging you to experiment with a variety of ideas, materials, processes and techniques.

You’ll be supported and encouraged to create innovative designs to a high standard of professionalism, enabling you to demonstrate just how multifaceted jewellery design and making can be and where you and your work fit in this vast field.

Our jewellery courses are taught at the award-winning School of Jewellery, which is located in the historic Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham. You will have access to unique industry standard equipment, based across Vittoria Street, St Paul's Square and Assay Office campuses.

We have several jewellery focused courses, find out which one is right for you.

Game Technical Art

If you’re a fan of video games and prefer to work creatively with digital mediums, Game Technical Art could be the course for you.

This course bridges the gap between art and technology, training you in 3D modelling, animation, motion capture and real-time rendering techniques. From building worlds to modelling and special effects, you will learn a range of skills to set you up as a digital artist.

Our games courses work in partnership with Unity and Unreal, and we’re also top 5 in the UK for animation and games design courses (Guardian League Table, 2024).

Art and Design

If you’re an artist, designer, thinker or coder and you’re willing to explore a range of various creative outputs – this course is for you. The course enforces the idea of creating interdisciplinary work, as opposed to being a specialist in one area, diversifying your creative thinking and outlook to prepare you for industry.

Many creative studios function with an interdisciplinary mindset and this course provides perfect preparation for this environment.

This course is taught at our historic and prestigious School of Art, which is based in Birmingham city centre and has a wide range of facilities available to you, no matter what your medium.
