Two Foundation Fashion and Textiles students have designed and made costumes for the production of Midsummer Night’s Dream at The REP.

The production was shown on the main stage as part of the Uncommon Riches Festival, a festival of young talent inspired by the Commonwealth Games. Created by Young Rep The Company, The Rep’s programme for under 25s, the performance was set on a planet where jealous fairies and god control proceedings.
School of Fashion and Textiles student Wenxin Tan designed and made the costume for Queen of the fairies Titania, and course mate Dana Woodhams designed and made the costume for mischievous jester Puck.
Wenxin said: “I have always had a strong interest in plays, so I had no hesitation in choosing to work with The REP. As a female designer, I have always been interested in female characters, so I chose to make clothes for Titania, who seemed to me to be a powerful, feminine character. At the same time, as a young designer, I wanted to bring something new to this classic work.
"I was given a lot of creative freedom by the director, who was very positive about my designs, alongside Adela, who was the actress playing Titania; she was very cooperative during the fitting and gave me some valuable feedback. The final performance was amazing - such a great experience!"
"I must thank my lecturers Louise, Natalie and Paula for their guidance and help, they always supported me to help me achieve my goals when I was unsure of how to achieve my designs.”
Course Director of for the Foundation Year Fashion and Textiles course Louise Martin said: “It’s been an amazing opportunity for the students, as they have been working on site with The Rep’s wardrobe department, and have been offered more work experience while they continue their studies on the Costume Design degree course in the School of Fashion and Textiles.
“The production was amazing and really showed off the student’s excellent work.”
