Five reasons to study Film and Animation

If you're interested in the vast world of filmmaking or animation, BCU has several courses that cover these topics. Here are five reasons to study Film and Animation at Birmingham City University.

World Class facilities

On both our Animation and Film Production courses, you will have access to first classindustry-standard studio facilities, including the Green Screen Studio, BOLT JR+ high-speed camera robot, Motion Capture StudioSuit, high-spec computer labs and VR systems. The studios are set up in a conducive working environment with support from technicians and operators.

To support your learning, PCs and Macs are available across the campuses. Wacom tablets and Cintiqs are supplied to facilitate digital drawing and sculpting. Computers are equipped with the latest Adobe Suite and Autodesk software. Specialist animation software(s) are installed in dedicated computers for Digital Animators and visual effect artists.

Professional digital cameras, lighting and recording equipment are also available in the Hires and Loans store.

2. Employability

Graduates have gone on to work for companies such as the BBC, ITV, and Red Planet Pictures and Framestore, and work on productions for Working Title, Studio Canal, RDF Television, Discovery, Objective Productions, Love Productions, Studio Lambert, Channel 4, Sky, and Buffalo Pictures. Students from this course have also gone study at the National Film and Television School.

3. We’re ranked first!

We are the number one university in the UK for Film Production courses (Guardian League Table, 2024), meaning you will be studying at an institution that has outstanding teaching, facilities, course satisfaction and graduate outcomes.

4. ARRI Certified

We are an ARRI certified course. The ARRI accreditation means that we are able to offer ARRI certification on students' ability to use their industry-standard ARRI Alexa Mini cameras. These cameras have been used to shoot hundreds of films, including the 2019 Academy Award winner Green Book.

5. Industry opportunities

There are plenty of opportunities to enhance your industry awareness. Get involved with our Curzon Street Studios team in a wide range of production and film projects, including working on shoots and commercials for professional football clubs and high-profile industry giants such as Sony, Disney, Channel 4 and Microsoft.
