If you’re passionate about film whether that be behind the camera, editing or crafting stories, Birmingham City University has three courses that can help turn your passion into a career. Each course focuses on different aspects of the industry, from technical skills to storytelling and production.
BSc (Hons) Digital Film Production
This course is for those that love the technical side of filmmaking, working with cameras, lighting and post-production software with a major focus on how films are made from a technical perspective, with hands on, practical learning giving you the chance to work with industry standard equipment and cutting-edge technology.
Key topics include:
- Cinematography – Mastering the use of cameras, lighting and composition.
- Post-production – Mastering editing, colour grading and sound design.
- Production management – Learning how to bring a film to life from planning to execution.
The course also includes exciting opportunities to work on real productions. Past students have collaborated on projects like the documentary ‘Somewhere in La Mancha’, using high-end tech that is used in Hollywood productions.

Potential careers with this degree could be:
- Cinematographer – Crafting the visual look of films through camera work and lighting.
- Post-production editor – Assembling raw footage, applying effects, and ensuring the final product aligns with the director’s vision.
- Sound designer – Creating and integrating audio elements to enrich the cinematic experience.
BA (Hons) Filmmaking
This course is for those who want to develop their filmmaking skills across all areas, from script to screen. Filmmaking covers everything from writing and directing to production and post-production. It’s a creative, hands-on degree that gives you the opportunity to work on a range of film projects, including short films, documentaries and experimental pieces.
Key topics include:
- Directing – Learn to lead a creative team, work with actors, and bring scripts to life on screen.
- Producing – Understanding the logistics of film production, developing skills in budgeting, scheduling and resource management
- Screenwriting – Develop compelling narratives and scripts across different genres and formats.
Students on this course will also work on real-world projects, including collaborations with professional filmmakers and they will also be able to use industry standard equipment, working on live projects that simulate real film sets.
Potential careers with this degree could be:
- Director – Overseeing the artistic and dramatic aspects of film production.
- Producer – Managing the business and logistical elements of bringing a film to fruition.
- Editor – Crafting the final narrative by selecting and combining shots, adding music and ensuring there’s a cohesive story.
BA (Hons) Film and Screenwriting
This course is for those that have a passion for storytelling and want to focus on writing scripts for film and TV. You will craft compelling scripts and understand how stories are structured for the screen.
Students will gain skills in:
- Screenwriting – Learning how to write scripts for films, TV and digital media.
- Narrative theory – Studying the art of storytelling across different genres.
- Character development – Creating compelling and believable characters.
This course will also provide expert help from experienced writers and industry professionals allowing students to build a strong portfolio of work.
Potential careers with this degree could be:
- Screenwriter – Creating scripts for films, television shows, and digital media.
- Script editor – Reviewing and refining scripts to enhance narrative flow and character development.
- Story consultant – Advising on narrative structures and character arcs for various media projects.
