The benefits of working in healthcare

There's so many great reasons to work towards a career in healthcare - whether it's Nursing, Midwifery, Radiography or any of the other many careers, so we wanted to share just a few of the benefits you could look forward to in the future!

1. You'll make a positive impact every day

Undoubtedly the best thing about working in healthcare is the fact that you’ll be helping people every single day, whilst making a positive impact on their life. Regardless of your role within the industry, working in healthcare allows you to nurture your desire to help others and earn a living at the same time.

2.  No day will be the same

Working in healthcare is filled with challenges and no two situations are ever the same when it comes to dealing with patients. It will also offer you the chance to work with people from all walks of life, there will never be a dull day in this industry.

3. You'll develop both personally and professionally

You will become a stronger person during your role in the healthcare industry, as you’ll learn how to deal with high pressure situations and know practise how to keep calm in a crisis. You’ll also develop very quickly in your professional career as the NHS provides excellent training and support for employees. With the fast-paced nature of the job, there will always be more to learn too, new equipment, new procedures, and new surroundings!

4. You’ll never be out of a job

Statistically, there will always be jobs in healthcare, whether it’s full-time, part-time or through an agency, you'll never struggle to find work with your skills. Not only this but as the healthcare sector is universal, there’s plenty of international opportunities if you ever wanted to try out a new culture!

5. NHS discounts

One of the best perks of the job (aside from potentially saving lives) is the NHS discounts. Health Service discounts can save you money on almost everything from travel, to insurance to shopping! You can claim loads of discounts online and in-store by showing your staff card.

6. There’s a great pension

As a student, you’re probably not even thinking about your pension yet, but the earlier you start preparing for it, the better! The NHS offers one of the best pension schemes in the UK, as well as a tax free lump-sum when you retire, leaving you to put your feet up and relax!

7. There's also a great Annual Leave policy

Again, as a student – annual leave might not mean much to you right now, but once you’re in full-time work, it will become one of the most precious benefits about the job. Working for the NHS, you’ll get a holiday entitlement of 27 days per year, rising to 33 days after 10 years’ service!

8. Inclusive staff benefits

Healthcare can be one of the most flexible and supportive sectors for its staff. Employees of the NHS can often enjoy benefits such as flexible working, a trade union, sick-pay, child-care schemes, a bike scheme, affordable living schemes and a car servicing scheme!
